Copyright Compliance & Licensing

When selecting an article or chapter to include in a course reserve or course pack one needs to be aware of copyright and the restrictions on reproducing material. When using subscription-based resources such as articles and book chapters, it is best to provide a brief description of the resources and include the DOI or URL for the relevant resources. Open Access resources can be included as full text.

Using Copyrighted Material

  • Most printed or online material is protected by copyright;

  • Always be skeptical and acknowledge information that you got online as if it is protected by copyright, unless you know otherwise;

  • If you use information without authorisation, don’t be surprised when you get an email or takedown notice from the rights holder;

  • Check for copyright on webpages, there is usually a link to Copyright or Terms of Use or Conditions of Use that informs you about the rights of the creator.

  • When in doubt, rather ask permission, especially if your work will be made available on the online via a website, blog, e-book, e-journal, institutional repository or ETD database.

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) Library manages the use of copyrighted material for teaching staff, the following are the steps in this process:

  • Complete an online request form: https://lib.uwc.ac.za/index.php/uwc-copyright-clearance-request-form/;

  • The library will source possible avenues for obtaining digital versions;

  • If digital versions are unavailable, permission to digitise will be granted depending on each case;

  • Material can be placed on iKamva and course reserves or course packs can be utilised.
