The purpose of Collection Development is to grow and manage the collection in support of the University of the Western Cape's (UWC) curriculum and research activities. Activities that characterise collection development include:

• acquiring and processing recommended resources;

• assessing users' needs;

• developing collection management policies;

• identifying funding requirements;

• selecting and transferring materials;

• processing donations;

• managing and evaluating collections;

• weeding and resource sharing;

• representing and interpreting the collections to users.
